Huarón

Client: Pan American Silver Corp.

Pasco, Perú

Huarón is located in the district of Huayllay, in the province and department of Pasco, on the central slope of the Peruvian Andes, at an altitude of 4,534 m. a. s. l.; this mining operation is primarily dedicated to the extraction of zinc, silver, and lead, using mining methods such as conventional cut-and-fill, mechanized cut-and-fill, and long-hole drilling, selected according to the geological characteristics of the deposit. Additionally, it has mining and industrial infrastructure that enables efficient ore processing, ensuring compliance with high safety and productivity standards.

In this context, a series of specialized services and studies were carried out to ensure the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the operation, as detailed below:

  • Feasibility assessment and closure of tailings storage facilities: A comprehensive feasibility analysis was conducted for the closure of tailings facilities, including upstream or downstream raise strategies using waste rock, as well as the design of sustainable solutions to ensure stability and regulatory compliance.
  • Tailings dam raise engineering: Conceptual, feasibility, and detailed engineering were developed for tailings dam raises, optimizing storage capacity, structural safety, and operational continuity.
  • Construction management and quality assurance (CQA): Specialized supervision was provided for earthworks, concrete works, and installation of associated systems, ensuring compliance with technical standards during dam raises and hydraulic works.
  • Geotechnical monitoring and Engineer of Record (EoR): An integrated service was implemented, including continuous monitoring, instrumentation data interpretation, geotechnical analysis, and ongoing technical support to support decision-making and operational optimization.
  • Geotechnical studies and material characterization: Field investigation campaigns, specialized testing (SCPTu, laboratory, and geophysical methods), and characterization of tailings and foundation soils were carried out to obtain reliable design parameters.
  • Stability analysis and risk assessment: Physical and dynamic stability evaluations of tailings storage facilities and dams were performed, including seismic analyses, breach studies, and compliance with international standards.
  • Water management and hydraulic design: Drainage systems, water management, spillways, and water recovery systems were optimized to ensure effective hydraulic control and operational efficiency.
  • Integrated engineering and permitting for mining infrastructure: Engineering and technical documentation were developed for environmental permitting (MEIA, ITS), along with the design of complementary infrastructure and integrated planning of tailings and water management systems aligned with the life-of-mine plan.
