Huarón

Client: Pan American Silver Corp.

Pasco, Perú

The Huarón mining operation is located in the Huayllay district, Pasco province and region, in the central Andes of Peru, at an elevation of 4,534 m above sea level. The operation is primarily focused on the extraction of zinc, silver, and lead, using mining methods such as conventional cut-and-fill, mechanized cut-and-fill, and long-hole drilling, selected according to the geological characteristics of the orebody. In addition, the operation is supported by mining and industrial infrastructure that enables efficient mineral processing, ensuring high standards of safety and productivity.

In this context, a series of specialized services and studies were carried out to ensure the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the operation, as detailed below:

  • Tailings closure and feasibility assessment: Comprehensive feasibility analysis for the closure of tailings storage facilities, including raise strategies using waste rock and the design of sustainable solutions that ensure stability and regulatory compliance.
  • Engineering of conventional and filtered tailings storage facilities: Development of conceptual, feasibility, and detailed engineering for dam raises, optimizing storage capacity, structural safety, and operational continuity.
  • Construction management and quality assurance (CQA): Specialized supervision of earthworks, concrete works, and installation of associated systems, ensuring compliance with technical standards during dam raises and hydraulic works.
  • Geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation interpretation: Comprehensive monitoring services, including instrumentation data interpretation, geotechnical analysis, and continuous technical support for decision-making and operational optimization.
  • Geotechnical studies and material characterization: Execution of field campaigns, specialized testing (SCPTu, laboratory, and geophysical methods), and characterization of tailings and foundation soils, ensuring reliable design parameters.
  • Stability analysis and risk assessment: Evaluation of the physical and dynamic stability of tailings dams and storage facilities, including seismic analyses, breach studies, and compliance with international standards.
  • Water management and hydraulic design: Optimization of drainage systems, water management, spillways, and water recovery, ensuring effective hydraulic control and operational efficiency.
  • Integrated engineering and permitting for mining infrastructure: Development of engineering and technical documentation for environmental permits (MEIA, ITS), design of supporting infrastructure, and integrated planning of tailings and water management systems aligned with the life-of-mine plan.
  • Engineer of Record (EoR) – Tailings Storage Facility No. 5 and Filtered Tailings Facility: Technical leadership, monitoring oversight, operational support, and continuous evaluation of improvement opportunities for TSF No. 5 and the Filtered Tailings Facility.
