Zamora Chinchipe, Ecuador

The Mirador mining unit is located in the Zamora Chinchipe province, in southeastern Ecuador, within the Cordillera del Cóndor. This open-pit operation is one of the largest mining projects in the country and the first large-scale mining project to enter operation in Ecuador. The deposit is a copper-gold porphyry type, forming part of the Andean metallogenic belt, and is supported by industrial infrastructure that includes processing plants, tailings storage facilities, and high-capacity waste rock dumps.

In this context, a series of specialized services and studies were carried out to ensure the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the operation, as detailed below:

  • Geotechnical and geophysical evaluation: Seepage analyses were conducted for the Tundayme and Quimi tailings storage facilities, along with geophysical studies for subsurface characterization and identification of saturation zones, and a review of tailings dam stability.
  • Waste dump engineering: Detailed engineering was developed for the expansion of the southern waste dump across its different phases, ensuring stability and operational efficiency.
  • Laboratory and quality control: Design, implementation, and commissioning of the mine’s soils and materials laboratory, including equipment setup and technical support.
