Mantoverde

Client: Capstone Copper Chile SpA

Atacama, Chile

1. Project Overview

The Mantoverde project is located approximately 56 km southeast of Chañaral, Chile. The operation is an open-pit copper-gold mine and represents one of Capstone Copper’s key assets in the country.

The deposit lies within the Atacama Metallogenic Belt, a geologically significant district characterized by major copper mineralization systems.

2. Main Challenges

  • Systematic identification and classification of operational risks associated with the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF).

  • Alignment of quantitative risk assessment with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).

  • Adaptation of risk methodologies to a facility under construction supporting concentrate operations.

  • Development of Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) translating complex technical risks into actionable operational thresholds.

3. Our Approach and Solutions

GA Consultores implemented a structured risk management framework based on hazard identification and scenario-based analysis.

Applied Strategies

  • Interdisciplinary technical workshops to validate and prioritize critical risks.

  • Application of international best-practice risk methodologies for TARP development.

  • Definition of objective and measurable activation thresholds applicable under real operational conditions.

  • Delivery of structured response protocols supporting timely decision-making during critical events.

4. Results Achieved

  • Implementation of a structured risk management framework aligned with GISTM principles.

  • Early identification of critical TSF scenarios and corresponding mitigation strategies.

  • Strengthening of organizational safety culture and operational awareness.

  • Clear definition of roles and responsibilities across management levels.
