From March 29 to 31, 2017, the IV National Congress of Geosynthetics was held, an event that dealt with opportunities for manufacturers, representatives, installers, consultants, contractors, concessionaires, public and private entities, and those interested in optimizing technically and economically its works and projects, through the updating of knowledge in this growing field of engineering. On this occasion, our general manager, Denys Parra, participated as a lecturer and addressed the topic: “Geosynthetics for Waterproofing and Drainage of Leaching Piles, Tailings Deposits and Dismantling Deposits”. His presentation dealt with the technical specifications that must be taken into account for the waterproofing and drainage of mining components, such as waste rock dumps, tailings dams and leaching piles. Aspects related to the construction of sub-drainage systems, selection of the soil lining or GCL, protection of the geosynthetic lining, technical aspects for the use of the GCL, installation of the geomembrane lining, protection of the geomembrane, collection of leachates, protection of pipes, laying the overlay. Aspects of geoelectric leak detection in geomembrane were also discussed, explaining the water lance, dry lance and dipole methods. Finally, the construction processes and installation of geosynthetics and the usual problems encountered in construction were exposed.
