Shahuindo

Client: Minera Shahuindo S.A.C.

Cajamarca, Perú

Shahuindo is an open-pit mining operation dedicated to gold extraction, located at approximately 2,900 m.a.s.l. in the Cajamarca region of Peru. The project is owned by Pan American Silver, which operates through its Peruvian subsidiary, Shahuindo S.A.C. The distinctive feature of this operation lies in its metallurgical process based on heap leaching, which requires specialized infrastructure, including leach pads, solution ponds, waste dumps, and water management systems.

In this context, a series of specialized services and studies have been developed since the early stages in 2014, aimed at ensuring the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the operation, as detailed below:

  • Design and detailed engineering for pads and facilities: Development of conceptual, feasibility, and detailed engineering for leach pads, excess material deposits (EMD), waste dumps, stockpiles, and associated works, including expansions and phase optimization.
  • Geotechnical studies and stability analysis: Evaluation and design of pit slopes, pads, and deposits; numerical modeling; infiltration analysis; physical stability assessments; and specialized geotechnical support for operations and closure.
  • Solution management and hydraulic systems: Design of ponds (PLS, PME), drainage and subdrainage systems, channels, pumping and conveyance lines, including surface water management and seepage control.
  • Geotechnical monitoring and Engineer of Record (EoR): Implementation, monitoring, and analysis of instrumentation; stability control; and continuous technical support for critical pads, pits, and deposits.
  • Supervision, CQA/CQC, and MQA: Quality assurance and quality control during construction, including geosynthetics installation, earthworks, and geomembrane manufacturing, ensuring compliance with technical standards.
  • Geophysical services and leak detection: Electrical resistivity tomography and geoelectrical leak detection studies in geomembranes to ensure integrity and optimize operational performance.
  • Field investigations and laboratory testing: Execution of drilling, geotechnical testing, and ore testing, along with interpretation of results to support design and engineering.
  • Technical support and permitting management: Comprehensive engineering assistance, preparation of technical deliverables, design optimization, and support in environmental and operational permitting processes.
