What is recycling?

Why is recycling important?
- Recycling prevents usable materials from ending up in landfills, dumps or our environment.
- Recycling reduces the need to use new raw materials.
- Recycling reduces the consumption of resources such as water and energy.
- Recycling creates new jobs.
- Recycling reduces CO2 emissions and contributes to the mitigation of climate change.
- Recycling creates new products.
Why is World Recycling Day celebrated?
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared May 17 as International Recycling Day in order to raise awareness about caring for the environment, and educate society about the importance to REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE products with the purpose of preserving the environment.
Did you know?
According to MINAM (2022), in Peru more than 21 thousand tons of municipal waste are generated daily, which is equivalent to more than 3 national stadiums full of garbage (we only recycle about 2%).
What can we do to contribute to recycling?
- Reduce, as much as possible, avoid single-use containers or products, especially plastic.
- Try to use products of recycled origin, environmentally friendly or with a longer useful life.
- Prioritize using durable household items.
- Separate waste at home.
- Participate in your district or community recycling programs.
- Practice the 3Rs in your day to day.
