In Peru, mining facilities, and in particular, the construction of leaching pads for the production of metals such as gold, silver, and copper, are mainly carried out in the Andean region, where the construction of the pads faces adverse and aggressive environments such as climatic, physical, and topographical conditions, high altitude, among others, which impact the construction cost both for the start of operations and for the expansion of the subsequent phases of the leaching pad. The construction cost represents a fundamental part of a leaching pad project and directly conditions the viability of the mining project. The purpose of this document is to provide a useful tool for estimating the construction cost of a leaching pad project under certain conditions, necessary during the feasibility assessment and decision-making stages in investment projects of this type. For the development of the cost estimation tool, an analysis was carried out using the database of projects executed in Peru in the last 10 years, in order to generate cost functions of the main construction activities of leaching pads, such as removal of organic soil, earthworks, subdrainage system, geomembrane system, solution collection system, and top cover, which represent the activities with the greatest impact on the construction cost of this type of facility. In addition, the document includes the development of cost functions for the main complementary facilities for the start of operations, such as the PLS pond, the emergency pond, and the subdrainage pond. This tool will contribute to quickly estimating the construction cost of leaching pads with minimal effort, which is very useful in the early stages of an economic evaluation; as a result, it may help in the future to streamline decision-making in mining investment projects. Additionally, with the aim of evaluating the application of this tool, simulations were carried out with information from projects already built to verify that the costs obtained are within an acceptable margin compared to the real construction costs at the pre-investment level. Finally, this tool is presented in this document, and the authors hope that it will serve as a reference for designers, contractors, and/or professionals linked to this market for the estimation of costs in future leaching pad projects according to their needs.
